The ideas he defends

Milei describes himself as a libertarian and, philosophically, an anarcho-capitalist. In the 2023 campaign he proposed dollarizing the economy and closing the Central Bank, sharply cutting public spending and the number of ministries, and deregulating the economy. As president he cut spending and deregulated, while dollarization did not happen. In foreign policy he aligned with the United States and Israel.

Javier Milei's government in figures

On taking office, Milei reduced the number of ministries and launched a fiscal adjustment aimed at eliminating the deficit and bringing down inflation. His main reform, the Ley Bases, was approved by Congress in 2024. Annual inflation fell sharply, although in 2026 it rose again on a year-on-year basis:

YearAnnual inflation in Argentina
2023211.4%
2024117.8%
202531.5%
12 months to September 202633.4% (1.9% in the month)

Annual figures are from the IMF and the 2026 figure from INDEC, according to Canal 26. The full series is in Argentina's inflation year by year. The 2026 economic debate centers on the exchange rate (see the dollar in Argentina and the strong peso) and country risk.

His administration has also faced controversy. The best known was his promotion, on February 14, 2025, of the $LIBRA cryptocurrency on his X account; the token collapsed hours later, Milei deleted the post and the case led to court investigations and a congressional inquiry, according to the entry on the case. Milei has denied any wrongdoing.

Javier Milei and the 2027 election

The Constitution allows one consecutive re-election, so Milei can run. His sister Karina Milei, general secretary of the presidency and his closest political ally, said in July 2026 that her "great goal" is the president's re-election, according to Filo News. Milei himself confirmed he will run, according to Política y Medios.

According to Equipo Mide, 57% say they would never vote for Milei, against 53% for Kicillof, and approval of his administration is around 35%, according to Zentrix and Synopsis, cited by Perfil. His most likely main rival is the Buenos Aires governor (see Axel Kicillof's profile). His salary as president is in how much Argentina's president earns.
