When is Argentina's 2027 presidential election

MilestoneDate
First round (general election)Sunday 24 October 2027
Runoff (if needed)Probably 21 November 2027
New government takes office10 December 2027
PASO primariesUncertain: the government proposes abolishing them

The first-round date and possible runoff appear in the entry for the 2027 general election. Besides president and vice president, 130 of the 257 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, 24 of the 72 Senate seats and most provincial governorships are up for election.

How Argentina elects its president

Under Argentina's Constitution, a candidate wins in the first round with more than 45% of valid votes, or at least 40% with a lead of more than 10 points over the runner-up. If nobody achieves that, the top two go to a runoff. The term is four years with one consecutive re-election allowed, so Milei can run.

The big unknown is the open primaries (PASO). In 2025 they were suspended by law (Law 27,783). On 22 April 2026 the government sent an electoral reform that abolishes them permanently, changes the single paper ballot, introduces "Ficha Limpia" (barring people convicted on appeal) and changes party financing, according to El Destape and Seprin. The bill has not passed: several governors defend the primaries, and the National Electoral Chamber urged Congress to settle the rules in advance because changing them mid-process may cause "more harm than good", according to BAE Negocios.

What else is on the ballot on 24 October 2027

The presidential vote coincides with a partial renewal of Congress: half of the Chamber of Deputies (130 seats) and a third of the Senate (24 seats, from eight provinces). That will determine the legislative support the next president has. Governors are also elected in most provinces, although several may hold their elections on a different date.

What is at stake for Argentina in 2027

The election will be a referendum on Milei's program: fiscal austerity, falling inflation and the exchange-rate regime, now under debate over the overvalued peso. On the other side, Peronism is trying to unite behind Kicillof, who governs the province with the most voters. In the region, Argentina's election will be watched alongside Brazil's runoff as a gauge of South America's political direction.
