Chilean President José Antonio Kast's approval fell four points to 29% and his disapproval rose to 66%, according to the Plaza Pública poll No. 700 by [Cadem](https://cadem.cl/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Track-PP-700-Octubre-S4-M2-VF.pdf), published on Sunday, October 25, 2026. It is the first time the president has dropped below 30% since he took office on March 11. The same poll shows that 92% disagree with the sentence reductions granted to people convicted of sexual crimes against minors.

The poll was conducted online on Friday, October 23, among 1,010 people in 178 municipalities, the same day the Ministry of Justice suspended the processing of those decrees. These are the numbers, the series of recent weeks and what the poll does and does not allow us to conclude.

What the Cadem poll says about the sentence reductions

How to read the poll

  • It is an online, non-probability poll: Cadem uses quotas by age, area and socioeconomic level and weights by gender, age, area, socioeconomic level and vote in the 2025 runoff. It does not report a margin of error.
  • One week is not a trend: approval rose from 30% to 33% on October 20 and fell back to 29% three days later. It is better to look at several readings and compare them with other polls.
  • Timing matters: fieldwork coincided with the day of greatest coverage of the sentence reduction case.

What comes next for the government

This week the government faces the debate on the 2027 Budget (see what the 2027 Budget prioritizes), the Central Bank's rate decision on Tuesday the 27th and the opposition's assessment of a constitutional accusation against Minister Rabat. Former Justice Minister Luis Cordero warned that suspending the decrees involves a "legal risk", because the ministry "has the obligation to decide" (La Tercera). Cadem publishes a new reading every Sunday.
