An architect in Chile earns on average between CLP 1.2 million and CLP 1.6 million gross per month in the fourth year after graduating, depending on the university, according to the Mi Futuro Employability and Income Search Tool of Chile's Undersecretariat of Higher Education, 2025-2026 edition. The highest incomes belong to graduates of the Pontifical Catholic University, the University of Chile, the Catholic University of the North and the University of La Serena, at CLP 1.5 to 1.6 million.

Mi Futuro calculates these amounts from graduates' tax returns filed with the SII, Chile's tax service, which makes it the most complete official source on how much an architect earns in Chile. This guide shows the ranking by university, employability, how long the degree really takes and how the salary compares with other construction-related careers. (CLP 1 million is roughly USD 1,000.)

Source: Mi Futuro, Architecture degree, retrieved on October 30, 2026. Of 22 programs listed, 17 have income data; five show "no information" (Autónoma, Las Américas, Finis Terrae, Federico Santa María Technical University and Metropolitan Technological University) because they lack the minimum number of cases. According to the methodology, the figure is the average gross monthly income of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 graduating classes in their fourth year, in September 2025 pesos, and only counts those earning above the minimum wage.

The gap between the best- and worst-paid universities is narrow: about CLP 400,000 a month. In other careers it is much wider, as the case of business engineers shows, ranging from CLP 1.2 to 3 million.

Employability of architects in Chile

Architecture has lower employability than other long professional degrees. The simple average of the 22 programs is 58.8% in the first year and 72.0% in the second year, according to our calculation with Mi Futuro data.

IndicatorRange across universitiesBest result
Employability in year 140.6% to 76.9%Catholic U. of the North (76.9%) and PUC (74.9%)
Employability in year 258.9% to 86.0%U. of Santiago (86.0%) and PUC (84.8%)

Source: Mi Futuro. The average real length, 15.1 semesters (more than seven years), exceeds the formal five or six years because the degree usually requires a final project that drags on. "Employability" is the share of graduates who earned at least the minimum wage according to the SII. This matters in Architecture: many young architects work freelance for firms or by project, and those with low or irregular income do not count as employed in this measure.

What raises an architect's salary in Chile

  • Type of work: designing in an architecture firm is not the same as managing construction sites, running real estate projects or doing technical inspection; management and site roles usually pay more.
  • Independent practice: many architects work by project and as freelancers; their income depends on commissions and varies from year to year.
  • Public sector: municipalities (building departments), the Housing Ministry, the Serviu housing agencies and the Public Works Ministry hire architects according to their pay scale and the grade of the post.
  • Specialization: a master's in real estate management, urban planning, energy efficiency or BIM (digital building modeling) widens the options.
  • Construction cycle: when real estate investment falls, design commissions are among the first to suffer.

On that last point, construction was one of the few sectors that added jobs in July-September 2026 (+2.8% year on year), according to INE bulletin No. 336, in a labor market with 9.8% unemployment analyzed in our story on unemployment in Chile.

How to become an architect in Chile

The professional title of architect is one that only universities can grant, and it requires a prior bachelor's degree (licenciatura) in Architecture, under article 63 of the General Education Law. That is why Mi Futuro's data for this degree only covers universities, unlike technical careers also taught at professional institutes.
