Pope Leo XIV will arrive in Peru on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., at Callao Naval Air Base, and over six days will visit Lima, Chiclayo, Pimentel, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba (Cajamarca), Cusco and Pucallpa, according to the official schedule released by the Holy See and published by El Peruano. He will celebrate four public masses and leave for Rome at midday on Monday, November 16.

Peru is the last stop of his South American tour, which began in Uruguay and continues through Argentina. For Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, it is not just another country: he was a missionary in Chulucanas and Trujillo, bishop of Chiclayo and became a Peruvian citizen in 2015, according to his official biography. This article lays out the schedule day by day, with venues, times and the crowd estimates of the organizers. Public holidays and non-working days for the visit are covered in this article.

How many people are expected at the pope's masses in Peru

The figures circulating are organizers' estimates, not actual attendance. For the mass on Monday, November 16, at Las Palmas Air Base, the secretary general of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference, Guillermo Inca, expects "at least 1,200,000 attendees": the Air Force will set aside 70 hectares in 37 zones, with staggered entry from 10 p.m. on Sunday through 14 gates, according to El Peruano. At the Pampas de Pimentel, a 55-hectare esplanade is being prepared for "close to one million faithful," with 15 entrances, 15 giant screens and more than 3,000 police officers, Correo reported with EFE data.

Why Chiclayo is key to Pope Leo XIV's visit

The schedule devotes two full days to Chiclayo and its surroundings, more than to any other city outside Lima. The reason lies in the pope's biography: on November 3, 2014, he was appointed apostolic administrator of Chiclayo, on December 12 of that year he was ordained bishop, and on September 26, 2015, he became bishop of the diocese, according to the Holy See. Before that he had been an Augustinian missionary in Chulucanas (Piura) from 1985 and in Trujillo between 1988 and 1999. He obtained Peruvian citizenship on August 24, 2015, and was elected pope on May 8, 2025.
