Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, earns 134,290 pesos net a month in 2026, the same as in 2025, according to the Federal Expenditure Budget (PEF) presented by the Finance Ministry and cited by [El CEO](https://elceo.com/economia/claudia-sheinbaum-recibira-aumento-de-sueldo-paquete-economico-2026-revela-cual-sera-su-salario/). For 2027, the draft budget proposes 134,239 pesos net per month, 51 pesos less, with gross pay of 193,671 pesos.
The president's salary works as a legal ceiling for all other federal public servants: nobody can earn more than she does. Here is the breakdown, the history of the presidential salary since 2018 and how it compares with other posts and countries.
How much the president of Mexico earns per month
| Item | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Net salary 2026 (PEF 2026) | 134,290 pesos |
| Proposed net salary for 2027 | 134,239 pesos |
| Proposed gross pay for 2027 | 193,671 pesos |
| Net annual salary 2026 (12 months) | 1,611,480 pesos |
The annual figure of 1,611,480 pesos is twelve months of net salary, according to El CEO; it does not include the year-end bonus or other benefits. At the mid-October exchange rate of 18.50 pesos per dollar (see the Mexican peso), the net salary is about US$7,260 a month (our calculation).
Breakdown of the Mexican president's salary
The draft 2027 budget, as summarized by Tus Buenas Noticias, breaks down the monthly presidential pay as follows:
| Component (2027 draft) | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Base salary | 52,968 pesos |
| Guaranteed compensation | 138,878 pesos |
| Benefits (five-year bonus and grocery allowance) | 1,825 pesos |
| Gross pay | 193,671 pesos |
| Net pay (after tax) | 134,239 pesos |
The same source gives annual gross pay of 2,881,014 pesos and annual net pay of 2,089,481 pesos for 2027. Those annual figures are higher than twelve times the monthly amount, probably because they include the year-end bonus and other annual benefits; the article does not explain this, so they should be treated with caution. The 2027 figures are a draft: the Chamber of Deputies must approve the budget by 15 November.

How much the president of Mexico has earned since 2018
Andrés Manuel López Obrador cut the presidential salary when he took office, in line with the Federal Law on Public Servants' Pay. This is the series of net monthly salaries according to El CEO:
| Year | President | Net monthly salary |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Enrique Peña Nieto | About 209,135 pesos |
| 2019 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 108,656 pesos |
| 2020 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 111,990 pesos |
| 2021 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 112,122 pesos |
| 2022 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 112,582 pesos |
| 2023 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 121,549 pesos |
| 2024 | Andrés Manuel López Obrador | 129,432 pesos |
| 2025 | Claudia Sheinbaum | 134,290 pesos |
| 2026 | Claudia Sheinbaum | 134,290 pesos |
| 2027 (draft) | Claudia Sheinbaum | 134,239 pesos |
López Obrador's first salary was about 48% lower than his predecessor's. Since 2019, the net salary has risen 23.6% in nominal terms (from 108,656 to 134,290 pesos, our calculation), less than cumulative inflation over the period, so in real terms the presidential salary is lower today than in 2019. The 2018 figure is approximate: El CEO describes it as the amount Peña Nieto's salary was "around".
What Sheinbaum reported in her asset declaration
In her asset declaration uploaded to Declaranet on 27 May 2026, Sheinbaum reported net income of 1,791,441 pesos in 2025, after tax, according to UnoTV. Of that total, 1,790,000 pesos came from her post as president, including salary and year-end bonus, and the rest from financial activity. The UnoTV article has an inconsistency: its headline says 1,970,000 pesos, but the body gives 1,791,441.

How the Mexican president's pay compares with other posts and countries
Because the presidential salary is the ceiling, other senior federal officials earn less. In March 2026, Infobae reported that senior officials will get no raise during the six-year term (Infobae). A senator earns 132,900 pesos net a month, just below the president (see how much a senator earns in Mexico), and a deputy has a similar allowance (see how much a deputy earns in Mexico).
| Comparison | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| President of Mexico (net) | 134,290 pesos |
| Senator (net) | 132,900 pesos |
Against the general minimum wage of 315.04 pesos a day in 2026 (about 9,451 pesos over 30 days), the president's net salary equals about 14 monthly minimum wages (our calculation). Put another way, the president earns in two and a half days what a minimum-wage worker earns in a month.
In our regional comparison of presidential salaries, how much Latin American presidents earn, Mexico sits mid-table, below Colombia, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru and Chile. To see the gap with other workers, read the minimum wage in Mexico in 2026.
How the presidential salary is set
The president does not set her own salary: it is fixed each year in the pay annex of the Federal Expenditure Budget, proposed by the Finance Ministry, approved by the Chamber of Deputies and published in the Official Gazette. Article 127 of the Constitution states that no public servant may receive higher pay than the president of the Republic, and the 2018 Federal Law on Public Servants' Pay develops that rule.
So when the presidential salary is frozen, as in 2026 and as proposed for 2027, the top salaries in the federal government, Congress and autonomous bodies are in practice frozen too.
