What benefits a senator gets on top of the allowance

The 2026 federal budget (PEF) lists other payments for each senator. According to Expansión, these are the annual budgeted amounts:

Expansión cites a monthly figure of 131,874 pesos in the same budget, close to but different from the pay manual. The budget was approved in 2025 and the manual updated in February 2026. Support for legislative work, such as advisers and office costs, is allocated separately and is not personal income.

The Constitution says no public servant may earn more than the president, whose net pay is 134,290 pesos under the budget. Mexican media also reported 137,582 pesos net for Supreme Court justices, above the president; that figure should be checked against the budget.

What a senator does

The Senate has exclusive powers the Chamber of Deputies lacks: it reviews foreign policy, approves international treaties, ratifies appointments such as ambassadors and senior military officers, and takes part in appointing members of autonomous bodies. Of the 128 senators, 64 are elected by plurality (two per state), 32 go to the first minority in each state and 32 are assigned by proportional representation on a national list. They serve six-year terms.

Who sets senators' pay

  • The Chamber of Deputies approves the federal budget, which sets the Senate's spending.
  • The Senate itself publishes its pay manual in the DOF every year.
  • The constitutional cap is the president's salary (Article 127).
  • Transparency: the Senate publishes pay on its transparency portal.
