Who sets how much the president of Chile earns
Neither the president nor Congress decides it each term. It is set by the Commission for the Setting of Remunerations, an autonomous body that determines the pay of the highest state officials: the president, ministers, undersecretaries and members of Congress, among others.
Why the president's salary went up
The commission ruled that, from 2026, the highest pay among officials should be the president's. The reason is that some civil servants and advisers earned more than the head of state, and some undersecretaries even earned more than their ministers.
The increase sparked debate. In 2021, as a candidate, Kast had pledged to cut his salary in half. As president-elect he said the amount “is a legal rule”.
