A full-time teacher in Chile, working 44 hours a week, cannot earn less than CLP 936,585 gross a month. That is the legal floor. Actual pay is usually higher and depends on three things: the teacher's tier in the national teaching career, years of service and qualifications. Here is how it is built.

The minimum pay for a teacher working 44 hours a week is 936,585 pesos gross. Actual pay depends on the career tier, years of service and qualifications.

The minimum a teacher earns

The floor is called the Total Minimum Remuneration. It is set by decree, published in the official gazette and adjusted every year for the cost of living, as El Dínamo explains.

Working weekTotal minimum pay (gross, CLP)
44 hours936,585
Per hour21,286
30 hoursAbout 638,600

The 30-hour value is a proportional calculation from the hourly rate. Many teachers do not work full time, so their floor is lower.

How a teacher's pay rises with the teaching career

The teaching career places teachers in tiers. Moving up a tier raises pay, and it does not happen simply with time: teachers must sit assessments. These are the tiers, according to the CPEIP, the Ministry of Education body that runs the system:

TierTypeYears of experience required
InitialMandatory0
EarlyMandatory4
AdvancedVoluntary4
Expert IVoluntary8
Expert IIVoluntary12

To move up, teachers submit a portfolio and sit a knowledge assessment. There is also a provisional tier, called Access, for those who join the system with four or more years of experience.

What else affects how much a teacher earns

  • Years of service: paid in two-year increments, capped at 30 years.
  • Degree and specialization: there is a bonus for holding a professional degree and another for the specialty.
  • Tier: each has its own allowance; it is the component that most sets one teacher apart from another.
  • Type of school: municipal, local public service, subsidized private or fully private.
  • Where they work: there are allowances for working in schools with a high share of vulnerable students.

That is why there is no single figure. Two teachers with the same hours can have very different salaries.

How much a teacher earns compared with other salaries

The full-time teaching floor is about one ninth of a legislator's gross pay. See how much a police officer earns in Chile and how much a member of Congress earns.
