The Chilean passport costs CLP 69,660, has 48 pages and lasts 10 years. It is requested at the Civil Registry, by appointment, and the only document needed is a valid national ID card. This guide brings together the price, the steps and the special cases, using the information published by ChileAtiende, the government's services portal.

Today there is a single version of the document. Previously you could choose between 32 and 64 pages, at different prices; that option no longer appears on the official page. There is no reduced price for renewals either: getting a passport for the first time and renewing it cost the same.

The current price comes from a 22% reduction announced by the Ministry of Justice and the Civil Registry, when the price dropped from CLP 89,740 to CLP 69,740. Even so, it remains a significant expense: it equals one eighth of the minimum wage.

How to get the passport, step by step

  • Book an appointment. Go to the Civil Registry website and reserve with your ClaveÚnica, Chile's single digital login. If you do not have one, you need to request it first.
  • Go to the office you chose. The procedure is in person: they take your photograph, signature and fingerprints.
  • Bring your ID card. It must be valid and in good condition. If you do not have it, give your RUN number and request the ID card and passport at the same time.
  • Pay for the document. The price is CLP 69,660.
  • Check the status of the application. The Civil Registry lets you look it up online.
  • Collect the passport. It is normally handed over at the same office where you applied.

The delivery time is given by the Civil Registry when you apply and varies with the time of year. In high season, before the summer and winter holidays, appointments run out first at offices in the big cities. The official information is on the ChileAtiende passport page.

Passports for children and teenagers

Minors also need their own passport: there is no option to include them in an adult's. What changes is how the appointment is booked.

CaseWhat to do
Under 14Book with the adult's ClaveÚnica, choosing the 'Minors' option
Several childrenOne appointment for each child
Collecting the documentIt has its own requirements, which the Civil Registry explains when booking
PriceThe same: CLP 69,660

Having a passport is not enough for a minor to leave the country. Authorisation from both parents or from whoever has custody is also required, a separate procedure worth checking well before buying tickets.

Which countries Chileans can visit without a passport

Not every trip requires one. According to ChileAtiende, eight South American countries can be entered with just a valid ID card in good condition.

CountryDocument that is enough
ArgentinaNational ID card
BoliviaNational ID card
BrazilNational ID card
ColombiaNational ID card
EcuadorNational ID card
ParaguayNational ID card
PeruNational ID card
UruguayNational ID card

For the rest of the world a passport is needed, and sometimes something more: some countries require the document to have at least six months of validity at the time of entry. A passport that expires in four months can leave you unable to board even though it is technically still valid.

Passports abroad, loss and theft

SituationWhat applies
Chilean living outside the countryIt is processed at the consulate. The consulates' site quotes US$91, plus a consular fee
Loss or theft in ChileBlocking in person at any Civil Registry office
Loss or theft abroadBlocking through the consulate
Cost of blockingFree
Effect of blockingPermanent: the document cannot be reactivated

Blocking is permanent. If the passport turns up later, it is no longer valid and a new one must be paid for. That is why it is worth being sure it is lost before blocking it, without waiting too long if it was stolen.

Tips to avoid overpaying or missing the trip

  • Check the expiry date before buying tickets, not after.
  • Book the appointment at least two months ahead if you travel in summer or during the winter holidays.
  • If your ID card is about to expire, renew both documents in the same visit.
  • If you are travelling to a neighbouring country, confirm whether the ID card is enough: you may not need the passport.
  • Long weekends concentrate travel: check the 2027 public holiday calendar to plan ahead.

If you buy tickets during a sales event, compare the price calmly. We explain how in the Black Friday 2026 guide, where travel and tourism is one of the categories with most brands.

Passport, ID card and visa: they are not the same

It is common to mix them up when planning a trip. They are three different documents, each issued by a different authority, and one does not replace another.

DocumentWhat it is forWho issues it
National ID cardIdentifying yourself in Chile and entering eight South American countriesCivil Registry
PassportProving your identity and nationality in the rest of the worldCivil Registry, or the consulate if you live abroad
Visa or entry permitAuthorising your entry to a specific countryThe destination country

A passport does not guarantee entry to any country. Each state decides whether it requires a visa, an electronic permit in advance, a return ticket or a minimum validity for the document, and those rules change. The safe course is to check them on the website of the destination country's consulate before buying the ticket.

  • Check the validity. Many countries ask for six months counted from the date of entry.
  • Confirm whether you need a visa or electronic permit. It is processed separately and can take weeks.
  • Look at the stopovers. Some countries also require documents from passengers in transit.
  • Carry a copy. A photo of the passport on your phone and another in your email helps if you lose it.
  • If you travel with minors, bring the exit permit as well as each child's passport.
