Chile's Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU) pays CLP 250,275 a month to people aged 75 or older since September 2026, and CLP 231,732 to those aged 65 to 74, according to the Pensions Superintendency and the Social Security Institute ([Pauta](https://www.pauta.cl/dato-en-pauta/2026/09/01/pgu.html); [Pensions Superintendency](https://spensiones.cl/portal/institucional/594/w3-article-16886.html)). This is the second of three steps in the pension reform: in September 2027, all beneficiaries from age 65 will move to the higher amount.
The PGU is a state benefit, funded from general taxes, paid to people aged 65 or older who are not in the richest 10% of that age group, whether or not they have a pension from a private fund (AFP). This guide sums up current amounts, how it is calculated and what happens in 2027.
How much the PGU pays in 2026
| Group | Maximum monthly amount | Since |
|---|---|---|
| Aged 65 to 74 | CLP 231,732 | February 1, 2026 (CPI adjustment of 3.45%) |
| Aged 75 to 81 | CLP 250,275 | September 2026 (pension reform) |
| Aged 82 or older | CLP 250,275 | CLP 250,000 since September 2025; CLP 250,275 since February 2026 |
Sources: Pensions Superintendency, which announced the February adjustment, and Pauta, which details the September increase. The maximum increase for those moving to the new bracket is CLP 18,543 a month (our calculation: 250,275 minus 231,732). The September increase was automatic for those already receiving the PGU who were 75 or older on September 30; those turning 75 between October 2026 and August 2027 will get it from the month of their birthday.
Who receives the PGU
- Be 65 or older.
- Not be in the richest 10% of the population aged 65 or older, according to the Pension Targeting Score calculated by the Social Security Institute (IPS).
- Have lived in Chile for at least 20 years, continuous or not, since age 20, including at least four of the five years before applying.
- Have a base pension below the upper pension threshold (see the next table).
The requirements are set out in Law 21,419, which created the PGU in 2022 (ChileAtiende; AFP Habitat). You can check whether you are a potential beneficiary with your RUN on the Pensions Superintendency or ChileAtiende websites, or by calling 101.

How the PGU is calculated from your base pension
The PGU is not the same for everyone: it depends on the base pension, which is the sum of the pensions the person receives from other systems (AFP, insurance company, IPS or others). Since February 1, 2026, these thresholds apply (Pensions Superintendency):
| Monthly base pension | PGU payable |
|---|---|
| Up to CLP 789,139 (lower pension) | The full amount: CLP 231,732 or CLP 250,275 depending on age |
| Between CLP 789,139 and CLP 1,252,602 | A decreasing amount that shrinks as the base pension approaches the cap |
| CLP 1,252,602 or more (upper pension) | No PGU |
Before February, the lower pension was CLP 762,822 and the upper pension CLP 1,210,828. Both are adjusted every February 1 by the previous year's CPI change, just like the PGU. To understand that index, see what Chile's CPI is.
Example: how much PGU someone with an AFP pension receives
Between the lower and upper pension, Article 12 of Law 21,419 applies a linear formula: maximum PGU × (upper pension − base pension) ÷ (upper pension − lower pension). With current values, the approximate result is as follows (our calculation):
| Base pension | PGU aged 65 to 74 | PGU aged 75 or older |
|---|---|---|
| CLP 500,000 | CLP 231,732 | CLP 250,275 |
| CLP 900,000 | CLP 176,301 | CLP 190,409 |
| CLP 1,000,000 | CLP 126,301 | CLP 136,408 |
| CLP 1,100,000 | CLP 76,301 | CLP 82,407 |
| CLP 1,300,000 | CLP 0 | CLP 0 |
These are reference amounts: the IPS calculates the exact figure from each person's base pension, and there may be differences due to rounding or other benefits. The text of the law is available at the Library of the National Congress.
When the PGU rises again
| Date | Scheduled change |
|---|---|
| September 2025 | PGU of CLP 250,000 for people aged 82 or older (done) |
| February 1, 2026 | CPI adjustment: CLP 231,732 and CLP 250,275 (done) |
| September 2026 | Higher amount for people aged 75 or older (done) |
| February 1, 2027 | Adjustment for 2026 CPI |
| September 2027 | Higher amount for all beneficiaries from age 65 |
The reform timeline is in Pauta and BioBioChile. The February 2027 amount will depend on CPI for all of 2026, which stood at 4.0% year to date in September according to the INE; the exact figure will be known in early January. In September 2027, beneficiaries of the armed forces and police pension funds (Capredena and Dipreca) who receive no other pension will also be able to apply for a top-up.

The PGU compared with the minimum wage and other figures
| Reference | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| PGU, aged 65 to 74 | CLP 231,732 |
| PGU, aged 75 or older | CLP 250,275 |
| Minimum monthly wage (since May 2026) | CLP 553,553 |
| PGU for 75+ as a share of the minimum wage | 45% (our calculation) |
The minimum wage comes from our guide to Chile's minimum wage. The PGU complements AFP pensions, whose funds have had an uneven year (see the fall in Fund E). And as Chileans live longer (see life expectancy in Chile), the PGU carries more weight in older people's income.
