When gasoline prices in Chile change next
Since Law 21,537, in force since January 2023, the Fuel Price Stabilization Mechanism (MEPCO) stopped moving prices every week in order to avoid swings. In practice, gasoline and diesel have changed every three weeks: the five increases from July to October came on July 30, August 20, September 10, October 1 and October 22, according to a tally by Emol.
| From Thursday | Gasoline (per liter) | Diesel (per liter) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 30 | +CLP 32.9 | +CLP 28.5 | Emol |
| August 20 | +CLP 34.8 | +CLP 97.4 | Emol |
| September 10 | +CLP 35.0 | +CLP 89.0 | Emol |
| October 1 | +CLP 39.4 | +CLP 95.0 | Emol |
| October 22 | +CLP 41.3 | +CLP 91.5 | ENAP |
| October 29 | CLP 0 | CLP 0 | ENAP, October 28 report |
| November 12 (next cycle) | To be announced | To be announced | Vivarae News calculation |
If the three-week schedule holds, the next move in gasoline and diesel prices would come on Thursday, November 12, with the report ENAP will publish on Wednesday the 11th. This is a Vivarae News projection based on previous dates, not an official announcement. Kerosene follows a different rule, the Oil Price Stabilization Fund (FEPP), and can change every week: on October 28, ENAP estimated a drop of CLP 25.7 per liter.
After the five increases, gasoline is up CLP 183.4 per liter since late July and diesel CLP 401.4. Details of that streak are in our article on the fifth gasoline price increase.
Who sets gasoline prices in Chile
- ENAP does not set prices. The state-owned company estimates every Wednesday how much the wholesale price will change, based on import prices from the US Gulf Coast, transport costs and MEPCO rules.
- MEPCO uses the specific fuel tax to smooth swings in international oil prices. The Finance Ministry calculates and publishes the variable component of that tax, according to its official website.
- Distributors and each station set the final retail price. That is why two pumps in the same district can charge different prices.
- The CNE publishes the prices stations report on Bencina en Línea, where drivers can search for the cheapest one by district.
