Chile's identity card (cédula de identidad) costs CLP 3,820 for Chileans and CLP 4,270 for foreigners in 2026, according to the official procedure page on [ChileAtiende](https://www.chileatiende.gob.cl/fichas/3430-cedula-de-identidad). The price is the same for a first card, an in-person renewal, an online renewal or a reprint, and it did not change when the new digital ID arrived in December 2024.

Here is the Chilean ID card price by procedure, how long it lasts, how to apply without visiting an office and what to do if you lose it.

How long a Chilean ID card is valid

CaseValidity
General rule10 years
People over 80, and over 60 with severe dependency20 years (within Chile only); 10 years as a travel document
Online renewal3 years
ReprintKeeps the expiry date of the previous card
ForeignersSame validity as the residence permit (5 years with permanent residence)

Online renewal is faster, but the card lasts only three years because it reuses the photo and data of the last card. For a 10-year document you need to visit an office with an appointment.

How to renew a Chilean ID card online

Online renewal is for Chileans only and applies to an expired card. Requirements, according to ChileAtiende and Meganoticias:

  • Having a ClaveÚnica (government login).
  • Having been over 16 when the last card was issued.
  • The last card expired no more than 8 years ago.
  • No other card application in progress.

The procedure is done on the Civil Registry website: accept the terms, log in with RUT and ClaveÚnica, choose a pickup office and pay. An email arrives when the card is ready, in about eight business days according to Meganoticias. At pickup, identity is verified by fingerprint.

What to do if you lose your ID card

  • Block it immediately: online with ClaveÚnica or at 600 370 2000, option 1. It is free.
  • Request a reprint in the CedulApp app (Android and iOS) or with an office appointment. It costs the same: CLP 3,820 for Chileans.
  • Reprint requirements: being 16 or older at the last application, a card issued after September 2013 and no changes to your name, sex or birth data.

A reprint only changes the document number: the photo, data and expiry date stay the same as the lost card.

The new digital identity card

Since December 16, 2024, the Civil Registry has issued a card with a chip and more than 30 security features, designed by French company Idemia, which can also be used through an app for online procedures (El Dínamo). Idemia won the ID and passport contract in 2021 for US$ 226 million and 10 years (CNN Chile). Switching to the new card is optional: cards requested up to December 13, 2024 remain valid until they expire.

How to get a Chilean ID card at an office

For a first card or an in-person renewal, no documents are required: you only give your full name, date of birth and RUN, according to ChileAtiende. The steps are:

  • Book an appointment on the Civil Registry website at an office that works with scheduling. Each family member needs their own appointment.
  • Go to the office on the booked day, where your photo, signature and fingerprint are taken. You pay CLP 3,820.
  • Keep the receipt: you need it to collect the card. If you lose it, you must fill out a form and give your fingerprint again.
  • Collect the card at the same office when it is ready. You can check the status on the Civil Registry website.

If you want your profession printed on the card, you must be in the professional registry; for a renewal you must show your original degree, which a civil officer validates.
